Free F'alling at the Supermarket
Synopsis
Free F’all Sundays (F’all = Free for All) is the name of a weekly open mic that takes place at the Supermarket in Kensington Market, Toronto every Sunday night.
Over the years, the dedicated organizers, Steve York and Leh-Lo (Tony Rabalao) have successfully built up one of the most talent rich open mics anywhere, and combined with an unsurpassed community spirit and atmosphere, it has become the premier venue in Toronto for new talent.
The film captures the essence of a night at the Supermarket, and through meeting and getting to know the organizers and performers, shows how we all can benefit by being positive and helping each other out.
Director Statement
The city of Toronto is well known for it’s diverse musical culture, and has become home to musicians from around the country and abroad. On any given night, the level of talent at local bars, open mics, and other musical venues is truly incredible.
Personally, I can appreciate this since I have been playing music all my life. Although I did aspire to be a musician at a young age, I chose a different path but have always respected and been fascinated with those that were actually able to make a living doing what they truly love.
Since discovering the weekly open mic Free F’all Sundays at the Supermarket in Kensington Market, I've met and become acquainted with the core group of organizers and producers, managers, and die hard musicians that go there every week to play. I've been truly impressed with the level of talent, professionalism, dedication, and spirit of co-operation that exists there.
I wanted to make this film as a tribute to all those great musicians who are working so hard at what they love, and I hope it inspires other young artists to get out there and play their music.
